Why the Body Responds Faster Than the Mind

The Consistency Problem With Mental Techniques

This is not an argument against meditation. The long-term benefits of sustained contemplative practice are well-documented and genuinely significant. Regular meditators demonstrate structural changes in the prefrontal cortex, improved emotional regulation, and lasting improvements in HRV that accumulate over years.

The argument, rather, is about access and reliability. For an individual who has never meditated, sitting quietly for twenty minutes while attempting to observe the breath is a cognitively demanding task that often produces frustration rather than calm. The sympathetic nervous system, already primed for threat detection, tends to interpret enforced stillness as an opportunity to surface unresolved anxieties.
